Kinsman: Brother’s Keeper by Isaac R. Langford is a sweeping work of American historical fiction set against the Tennessee frontier and the turmoil of Spanish Florida during the First Seminole War.

Two Brothers Shaped by War

The war may be ending for Lorcan Rogan, but the battle within him has only begun.

Lorcan returns to his family’s Tennessee homestead carrying memories of war that refuse to remain in the past. His older brother, Ferdia Rogan, understands more than Lorcan realizes.

Decades earlier, Ferdia watched their father die at the Battle of Fallen Timbers. Since then, he has devoted his life to preserving the honor, traditions, and future of the Rogan family.

But the brothers have learned very different lessons from the bloodshed that shaped them.

Lorcan believes he can reclaim his family’s lost honor through vengeance. Ferdia believes a man must master his wounds and fulfill his duty to those who depend upon him.

As Lorcan’s anger, grief, and drinking threaten his marriage and family, the bond between the brothers begins to fracture.

Then Lorcan leaves Tennessee and follows the gathering forces of war south into Florida.

A Brother’s Journey into War

Ferdia faces a choice. He can remain on the farm he spent years building, or he can follow the brother he helped raise into a conflict he wants no part of.

His search carries him from the Tennessee frontier into the turmoil of the First Seminole War.

There, American soldiers, Creek and Seminole peoples, and Black communities become caught in a struggle far more complicated than simple divisions of friend and enemy.

Samuel Boaz Freeman, a free Black traveler, joins Ferdia on the journey. His friendship and faith challenge Ferdia’s understanding of honor. Along the way, Ferdia must confront the shame, fear, and bitterness he has carried since his father’s death.

What begins as a search for a lost brother becomes a journey through war, family loyalty, vengeance, forgiveness, faith, and redemption.

Historical Fiction from the American Frontier

Set amid real events of the early nineteenth-century American frontier, Kinsman: Brother’s Keeper combines an intimate family saga with a turbulent chapter of American history.

The story unfolds against the aftermath of Prospect Bluff, the First Seminole War, Andrew Jackson’s Florida campaign, and the conflicts reshaping the American South.

Readers of historical family sagas, Southern historical fiction, military historical fiction, frontier novels, and early American historical fiction will find a character-driven story about brothers, family, faith, and redemption.

At its heart, Kinsman asks one timeless question:

How far would you go to bring your brother home?
